WASHINGTON —
Prachanda, the former Maoist rebel leader who served as Nepal's prime minister twice, is back in the role, and officials in the ruling coalition say Nepal's new government will be between its two big neighbors, China and India. Find a balance and will go all out to develop the economy.
Nepal held a general election last month, but no party in the Congress won a majority. Prachanda's appointment as prime minister results from consultation and coordination among various parties in Congress.
Prachanda, whose real name was Pushpa Kamal Dahal, was a member of his party CPN (Maoist Center), and outgoing Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deh. Upa's governing coalition unexpectedly won the prime ministership on Sunday after parting ways and backing from the main opposition Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) and five other smaller parties. This will also be his third term as Prime Minister of Nepal.
According to the Kathmandu Post, Prachanda has the support of 169 members of the 275-member parliament. His leadership of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) won only 32 parliamentary seats in the general election last month, ranking third, so he was a surprise as prime minister.
Former Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli (Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli) is the leader of Nepal's main opposition party, the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist), who supports Prachanda as prime minister. He is regarded as a pro-China faction by the outside world.
Although Nepal is a small and poor country, its strategic position is very important because it is adjacent to China and India. Nepal, along with several South Asian countries, has been a target of China and India trying to exert influence. Nepal, with a population of 30 million, is located in a strategic location in the Himalayas. Since the majority of the population is Hindu, and it has a long historical relationship with India and a long open border, it is regarded as a natural ally by India.
"We maintain an equidistant relationship with our two neighbors," Reuters quoted Narayan Kaji Shrestha, a senior member of Prachanda's CPN (Maoist Center) party. Shrestha's words. Shrestha has since been appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the new government of Nepal.
"We must immediately focus on controlling inflation, maintaining reserves, raising capital spending, narrowing the trade deficit, and lowering interest rates," Shrestha said.
Prachanda also appointed six cabinet ministers and handed over the crucial post of finance minister to Bishnu Prasad Paudel of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML). Baldur had previously served as Nepal's finance minister twice.
Prachanda to serve as foreign minister
In order to win over Nepal, China and India have provided billions of dollars in aid and investment to Nepal. Nepal is rich in hydropower resources.
India is currently Nepal's most significant trading and economic partner. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also one of the first foreign leaders to congratulate Prachanda on his appointment as prime minister.
"The unique relationship between India and Nepal is based on deep cultural ties and warm people-to-people ties," Modi tweeted. "I look forward to working with you to further strengthen this friendship."
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning also congratulated Prachanda on his appointment as the new Prime Minister of Nepal when answering reporters' questions at a regular press conference held on Monday, and hoped that Nepal would maintain national stability and economic and social development.
"As a traditionally friendly neighbor, China attaches great importance to China-Nepal relations, and is willing to work with the new government of Nepal to expand and deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields between the two countries," Mao Ning said.
